What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are permanent dental prosthetics that are surgically placed in the jawbone to create a firm foundation to support new teeth. Made of titanium, they mimic the roots of teeth to offer continuous stimulation to the bone to prevent deterioration and facial sagging. As the only tooth replacement solution to provide complete root-to-crown restoration, dental implants are known to last decades if not a lifetime when patients practice optimal care and maintenance.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation – You will meet with Dr. Battle who will go over your oral and overall health and jawbone density. Determining whether you need preliminary treatments beforehand or not, he will decide the type of restoration you need based on the number of teeth you need to have replaced.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – Once ready for surgery, he will administer local anesthesia before placing each implant into its appropriate location along the jaw.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – After closing the gum tissue, you will return home to allow osseointegration to occur, which is the process of the implants fusing with your bone tissues. You’ll then return to have your metal abutments, which are small connector pieces that attach your implants with your restoration, put into place.
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – To complete the process, you’ll receive your customized restoration, which will be a crown, bridge, or denture depending on your unique needs.

Benefits of Dental Implants

The benefits of dental implants are many. When compared to other forms of tooth replacement, the advantages stand high above the rest, delivering exceptional results that outlast dentures and dental bridges. Apart from their ability to remain firmly in place for decades or even a lifetime, dental implants work just like natural teeth so that you can eat your favorite foods, speak clearly, and exude the confidence you deserve.

Who Dental Implants Can Help

Most patients who suffer from tooth loss can receive dental implants. The only caveat is that some may require preliminary treatments. Depending on your oral and overall health as well as your jawbone, Dr. Battle will decide how best to move forward. If you require periodontal therapy, tooth extraction, or bone grafting, it will be included in your treatment plan. Otherwise, we’ll discuss the versatility of dental implants and give you the green light to undergo surgery to replace your missing teeth.

Missing One Tooth

When only one tooth is missing, we can easily replace it using a single dental implant post, metal abutment, and custom-made dental crown. This will alleviate the need for a fixed bridge and keep your healthy teeth fully intact.

Missing Multiple Teeth

Multiple, consecutive missing teeth can be restored using two dental implants and an implant bridge. Instead of relying on healthy abutment teeth to serve as anchors, we will place the posts into the exterior sockets before attaching the dental bridge on top, securing it into place.

Missing All of Your Teeth

An entire arch of missing teeth no longer has to be replaced with traditional dentures. Instead, we will use between four and eight dental implant posts to place along the jawbone before adding an implant denture. This will allow the prosthetic to fit nicely into place, ensuring you can eat, speak, and smile with ease.
